INDONESIA / BALI Recon

What is a Recon Tour and why the discount? Every time we host a tour on a brand new route, we discount the cost. Whilst we have ridden the route, and all hotels etc meet the standards of all our tours, this experience might be a little less polished, with some elements still being refined - but adventure is guaranteed!

When someone mentions Bali, the last thing you’re likely to think of is cycling, and we’d like to help change that.

We headed out there in the spring of 2024 without any great expectations yet we were stunned by the combination of elements that told us pretty quickly that we had to do a tour here. In Bali you can find astonishing natural beauty, tons of elevation and very peaceful, quiet roads - if you know where to look.

The villages are endlessly fascinating, featuring elaborate gateways and many temples and statues, the styles of which reflect that Balinese Hinduism combines Hindi, Buddhist, Javanese, and ancient indigenous beliefs, coming together to create a multi-faceted and very colourful culture.

Day 1 sees us transported by van 35km from Kuta out to the oceanside paradise that is Waka Gangga, where we will have an optional light ride and the official Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 is where the real adventure begins with a 79km / 1290m ride up around the Tabanan area. We weave our way up to the rice terraces that the area is known for. The route we take has very little traffic, and the sense of escape that this brings, along with the stunning landscape that unfurls at every turn, comes together to create a little bit of magic.

On Day 3 we head to the glamorous resort of Homm Saranam, which sits resplendent upon the slopes 35km above Ubud. To get to the hotel we have to deal with 1,460 meters of elevation over 70km and more of Bali’s seemingly endless beauty! We will stay at Homm Saranam for two nights, as it’s a perfect place to unwind after the 78 kilometers of riding on Day 4.

Batur Volcano is on the route on Day 5 and we will cycle along the rim of its outer caldera, before descending down to Ubud, our destination that night after a 96km/1,870m ride.

Then we are on to the final day, the Queen Stage with 138km of wonderful riding, and a tasty 1,900m of climbing to go with it. We will head into an area called Sideman, far from the tourist route. Other than the odd car or motorbike, the scenery and small villages look and feel as though they’re out of another era.

We finish the ride at Segara Village, on Sanur Beach, where a glass of champagne on the beach and a sunset meal awaits. We are offering the option of an extra night’s stay at Segara Village, as it is the perfect place to get an extra 24 hours of peace, before heading back to reality.

Note: For this tour we recommend a road bike /all-road bike with 32mm to 35mm light gravel tires (for e.g. the 35mm Kimberlite tire from American Classic - we rode this route on these tires and they were ideal).

Please note that on all of our tours, we make sure that no one gets left behind, and always have one guide at the front and one at the back. We are all about inclusivity, not exclusivity - this is a collective, after all!

THE LOWDOWN

  • DAY 1

    ARRIVAL / WAKA GANGGA

    Est. time: 1-2hrs

Pick up by van in Kuta to drive out to the resort. A short leg-opener ride is an option, as is lounging by the pool and geting a massage. The Welcome Dinner is in the evening.

  • DAY 2

    WAKA GANGGA - BLIMBING 79km / 1741m

    Est. time: 4.5-5hrs

Up into the hills we go, riding alongside and through the gorgeous, layered rice fields far off the beaten track. Farmers tend to their crops, the odd scooter putt-putts by, clouds usually billow in the azure blue above and all is good below. We arrive at our hotel which sits in amongst the jungle for a hearty lunch.

  • DAY 3

    BLIMBING - BATU RITI 71km / 1870m

    Est. time: 4.5-5hrs

This is a day of more highlights with great riding yet again, lunch at the highly-rated Munduk Jaen Retreat restaurant which is nestled within tea fields, and, and of course our final destination, the 5-star Homm Saranam, where we will stay for two nights.

  • DAY 4

    BATU RITI LOOP 78km / 1491m

    Est. time: 4.5-5hrs

Once breakfast is done we head down in the direction of Ubud, zig-zagging our way down through small villages and past temples old and new. Different crops area grown in this area and the landscape changes too.

  • DAY 5

    BATU RITI - UBUD 95km / 2386m

    Est. time: 5-5.5hrs

A big day this one that takes us first up to the caldera rim of Batur Volcano then down on narrow roads on flowing descents along volcanic ridges, and then across them, where we drop down at high speed then straight back up on short climbs as steep as 18%. Another highlight is the lunch spot, which overlooks an expanse of black volcanic rock that marks the caldera.

  • DAY 6

    UBUD - SEGARA VILLAGE 138km / 2306m

    Est. Time: 6-6.5hrs

The final day of riding and we saved it for the Queen Stage. Words can't really do this dat of cycling justice but safe to say that it features some of the best scenery in Bali on roads with views that leave you shaking your head with a smile on your face. Riding around Sidemen, after the descent from Batur, is a favourite spot of ours.

  • DAY 7

    DEPARTURE

All great things must come to an end they say and our bike tours are no different! Those departing today will hop in the vans for the drive back to Kuta. However if you would like to relax for one more day at the beautiful Segara Village, please let us know and we will book an extra night.
