VIETNAM / HA GIANG LOOP

$3700 US / Single Supplement + $300

This tour offers the opportunity to ride in a landscape that is astonishing. Far away from the chaos of the cities and very much off the beaten track, what lies ahead is an opportunity to experience something magical.

This tour fully encapsulates the ethos of KOJO.

This tour requires a good level of fitness and a taste for adventure… and a dollop of fortitude!

Vietnam is a country known for its great food, serene Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities. It’s a nation with a deep sense of tradition, a rich history and a proud people. It’s also the home of some of the best cycling we’ve ever done. Taking back roads and high mountain passes, we not only encounter few cars, we actually have yet to encounter a fellow cyclist in several rides there to this date.

This tour starts in the 1000 year old city of Hanoi, a city that tingles the senses, then we make out way over to Lang Son in the east, right by the Chinese border. From there on we head up and over to the north-west, towards Ha Giang, working our way daily up winding roads and down incredible, free-flowing descents as we head towards the famous hill town of Sa Pa.

Along the way you’ll eat amazing food, behold landscapes you couldn’t make up, ride through Hmong villages and alongside vibrant terraced ride fields - and do a lot of climbing!

Note: For this tour we recommend an all-road bike or even gravel bike (if light) with 32mm to 40mm treaded road tires / light gravel tires.

35mm on a road bike would be fine too, but do bear in mind that road conditions change from week to week and that some roads that are fine to ride on a previous day may be covered in 2 inches of mud on another, and vise versa, some roads that a week previous would have been wet can be covered in a fine dust, dried out by the sun - rare but things like this happen. On a typical HG Loop Tour, only around 20km total of the 895km is in any way challenging to ride.

Please note that on all of our tours we make sure that no one gets left behind, yet there is a personal responsibility to be fairly confident you can manage the kilometers and elevation. Van support will be with us at al; times.

THE LOWDOWN

  • DAY 1

    HANOI

Check-in, dump the bags and head out to Hanoi’s Old Quarter for your first dose of sensory overload. Wander the alleyways, check out the serene Hoàn Kiếm Lake in the heart of the city, jump on a rickshaw, get some Phở and savour the taste of this ancient city. Finally we have our evening meal, which serves as the official welcome to the tour.

  • DAY 2

    HANOI

Acclimation Day, there will be also in the afternoon a free walking guide tour (2 hrs) that will explain the history of Hoàn Kiếm - the Old Quarter. Thisn is optional but we do recommend joining! Relax, visit some of the spots recommended in our Concierge Pack for great coffee and food, and prep for the ride out to Lang SOn on Day 3. We alos offer a 30km round trip ride on this day out to the local bike shop that we frequent when in town.

  • DAY 3

    HANOI - LANG SON 134km / 1520m

This day’s ride is the perfect introduction to cycling up north of Hanoi, as we weave our way through a variety of landscapes, heading east to Lạng Sơn, near the Chinese border. We will be cycling on mostly quiet roads, narrow lanes that do not feature heavy traffic. As we ride, the karst hills begin to appear in the distance, beckoning us onwards.

  • DAY 4

    LANG SON - CAO BANG 164km / 2894m

This is a long day in the saddle but a rewarding one. As we leave Lạng Sơn and we move deeper into the tranquil countryside, you feel the thread connecting you to modernity and its attendant stress becoming ever-thinner. The kilometres pass quickly as this remarkable landscape unfolds before your eyes, as we ride now right by the karst hills we saw from afar on Day 3. Here, the rice fields stretch on for several kilometres, and we observe the rhythm of daily life going on as we pass by the farmers in the paddies. We finish in Cao Bằng, get cleaned up, then head out to eat and and chat about the day just gone and the day ahead.

  • DAY 5

    CAO BANG - BAO LAC 93km /2090m

A shorter day, but again we climb. And what climbs they are. We cycle over two of the region's most renowned mountain passes: Ta Nenh and Khau Cốc Trà, defined by stunning views and thrilling descents. As we traverse these iconic passes, you’ll realise that Minh was right when he said that each day is more beautiful than the previous. The roads here settle upon the hillsides as if made of ribbon. This is a breathtaking ride in every sense, and the landscape will stretch the capacity of your senses. After reaching Bảo Lạc, we'll enjoy a hearty and filling evening meal.

  • DAY 6

    BAO LAC - DONG VAN 95km - 2905m

The ride begins from our hotel in Bảo Lạc, leading you through some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in northern Vietnam. This day will be again filled with challenging climbs, including the renowned Mã Pí Lèng Pass, known for its breathtaking views and steep inclines. Here you’ll see the views you’ve seen online, that are, remarkably, even better when seen first hand. Free up space on your phone - you’ll be taking a ton of photos on this day! Đồng Văn, our destination, is a small town in the highlands that features a great pizza restaurant - after this ride, carb-loading for Day 7 is highly recommended.

  • DAY 7

    DONG VAN LOOP 50km / 1710m

A new addition to our trusty Ha Giang Loop Tour, this ride allows us an extra night’s stay in the bustling little town of Dona Van, with it’s many dining options - the town actually features a very good Italian restaurant, perfect for carb-loading! This ride here is tough but beautiful. It is also optional, so if you’d like a day of rest, this is the perfect opportunity.

  • DAY 8

    DONG VAN - HA GIANG 135km / 3380m

The ride to Hà Giang is a special one. The landscape is very rugged, looking almost like a giant rock garden in places up on the karst plateau. The local houses too have a different look about them, and as we climb it is evident that living up here requires a certain fortitude. The descents steal the show in terms of the riding, with long smooth curves that allow us to flow through the corners. These descents and the amazing views make the climbs all the more worthwhile. Past the halfway point on this stage we begin the approach to Hà Giang, the sleepy hill town. This is a big ride, but it’s truly a highlight, and tomorrow on Day 8 we will rest up before our final push on to Sa’Pa.

  • DAY 9

    HA GIANG - SAPA 126km/ 2700m

Our penultimate day of riding begins with a 1.5 hour drive from Hà Giang to Việt Quang, where we will get the bikes from van whilst you fortify yourselves with a coffee for the ride ahead. We aren’t a fan of transfers either, but the first 70km from Ha Giang is congested with large trucks, and it’s simply safer to start at Việt Quang. From there, we ride through sleepy valleys and alongside a long reservoir before turning right to head to Lào Cai. All that is left before us is the final 20km climb to our destination: Sa’Pa. Famed for its iconic rice terraces, the mountaintop village is now a bustling little town, with an array of restaurants and bars.

  • DAY 10

    SAPA LOOP 51km / 1920m

As you can see, there’s not much flat in this region! Here we take the day to explore the valleys and rice terraces of this historically fascinating region, and we get some final elevation in the legs to be sure we sleep on the bust to Hanoi tomorrow! In the evening we will have our Farewell Dinner.

  • DAY 11

    SAPA - HANOI / Transfer

We have a decent stretch of road to cover here, some 350km, which will take roughly 4 hours. We will stop on the way to grab some refreshments, and thankfully our vans are very comfortable and allow for sleep. We’ll head to the same hotel that we began our trip at just over a week earlier in Hanoi, and then the next day is departure day.

  • DEPARTURE DAY

    HOTEL - AIRPORT

And it's bon voyage and hopefully we will meet again...
